SYNOPSIS

Everything takes place in different Italian locations during six days, the last in the life of Eluana Englaro. There are many fancy characters following different faiths and ideologies, whose stories are emotionally connected to that event. The film is a reflection about existential issues, concerning life and hope. A senator has to choose whether to vote or not for a law, against his conscience. Meanwhile, his daughter Maria, a pro-life movement activist, is protesting in front of the clinic, where Eluana is hospitalized. Roberto, with his younger brother, is on the opposite laical front. A famed actress waits her daughter’s awakening from a coma, for whom the faith and the hope of a miracle play a crucial role. The hopeless Rossa, wants to commit suicide, but the young doctor Pallido is against this.

CRITICAL NOTE

“Dealing with a passionate topic, as the case of Englaro is, Bellocchio doesn’t offer easy answers. It’s just an attempt to let people think. (…) My challenge is to annihilate the ideological oppositions, to put each of the characters in a situation of being “right” and “wrong”. In this way, the viewer can find on the screen the many tiles to rebuild the mosaic. Instead, in the background, the perfect use of the archive material lets to remember the real situation of those days. This allows the director to express his creative power (…)”. (Paolo Mereghetti, Il Corriere della Sera)
