Shot in the women’s prison of Lecce, this work – without bias and without indulgences, through interviews and meetings – explores the personal life, considerations, expectations and the nostalgia of a group of imprisoned women under the system of Maximum Security.
Caterina Gerardi claims that “prison is not a place for women”.
“In the Borgo S. Nicola Penitentiary tells the stories of some imprisoned women of the Maximum Security unit of the prison of Lecce. In this section are imprisoned women who are accused of being part of mafia-related criminal organizations.
At the beginning the project was presented, illustrated and discussed during several meetings with all the women inmates. In the end, however, the great number of subscriptions came from the imprisoned women of the Maximum Security unit, with whom the film has been made.
The protagonists of the film are women on average all quite young, gutsy, some of them with a good level of schooling and almost all of them with children.
The film also reproduces the words of two other women: those strong, efficient and convincing of Silvia Baraldini, a former political prisoner in the United States, which I have recorded during a public debate and those of Dr. Anna Rosaria Piccinni, who at the time was the director of the prison and who courageously allowed and facilitated the making of the film”.
