Danis Tanović, born in 1969 in Zenica, in Bosnia-Herzegovina (in the former Yugoslavia), was raised in Sarajevo. After completing a graduate degree in Civil Engineering, he studied piano at the University of Sarajevo Music Conservatory and cinema at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. Because of the war and the siege of the city he is forced to stop his studies: having followed the Army of Bosnia-Herzegovina as a war reporter, he started shooting a lot of material during dangerous missions. These materials, shot by him and his colleagues, will be widely used not only in news reports from all over the world, but also in films about the Bosnian war. In 1994, Tanović emigrates to Belgium to continue studying cinema at INSAS film school (Institut National Supérieur des Arts du Spectacle et des Techniques de Diffusion de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles), where he starts shooting short films and documentary films, between which to remember L’aube (1996) and Beudenje (1999), the latter, subsequent to studies, won a Prize at the Festival Cinéma du Réel (Cinema of the Real). His feature debut, a tragicomedy about the war of his homeland, No Man’s Land (2001) is selected in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Award for Best Screenplay, repeated at the European Film Awards; hereafter the film is featured at film Festivals everywhere, becoming one of the most awarded film debuts in the history of cinema and wins numerous awards, including the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Foreign
