He is an actor, a director and a playwright, among the most important in Italy.
He has starred in over 100 films, and has worked with famous Italian and international directors (Pietro Germi, Alessandro Blasetti, Giuliano Montaldo, Orson Welles, Joseph Losey, Edward Dmytryk, Christian Jacques, Alessandro D’Alatri and Ettore Scola). Intense and prestigious is his theatrical activity. He brought on stage performances of both classical and contemporary authors, with directors such as Visconti, Strelher, Menotti, Ronconi, and with his directions.
In addition to the works of Shakespeare, Pirandello, Aristophanes, Chekhov, Plauto, Caldwell and O’Neill, he has also represented his comedies and dramas. He is also a director of operas.
Famous are his readings of poems, of which recordings on vinyl were made in the 60s (Gold Disc for the album of poems by Garcia Lorca), and recently on CD as well.
