This documentary traces the career of the great master and pioneer of the horror genre through archive materials, familiar memories (his son Lamberto and his grandchild Roy), exclusive interviews of foreign authors who have loved and often mentioned his films (Roger Corman, Roman Coppola, Quentin Tarantino), and of his actors (John Phillip Law, Barbara Steele, Elke Sommer), technicians, directors, producers and script writers who have worked with him (Carlo Rambaldi, Alberto Bevilacqua, Dario Argento, Mario Monicelli, Massimo De Rita, Alfredo Leone) and of film historians (Tim Lucas, Callisto Cosulich).

“Finally a well done documentary about film, competent, enthusiastic, (…) essential to deal with a critical discourse on Mario Bava (…). A documentary in which some of the great American directors, from Joe Dante to Quentin Tarantino, from Roger Corman to Tim Burton, from John Landis to Martin Scorsese, they not only recognize the eminence of Bava but discuss about cinematographic technique, language solutions, zoom, special effects, renaissance workshop. (…) The most amazing part of the movie is precisely that: to show how good was Bava at using the movie camera, at creating effects with little money, at making the best use of every single shot. A hero of the film, according to Tarantino”. (Aldo Grasso, Il Corriere della Sera, 22 aprile 2004)
