Poland, 1946. The second world war ended not long ago and Emilia, a young widow, meets an American soldier, Norman, who is investigating war crimes. The man is still scarred by the pain he has suffered, but he sees in Emilia a chance of rebirth and someone to share a new life with. Emilia, who lost her husband after just a few months of marriage and now has to take care of her ill mother, questions whether it makes any sense for a human being to seek love and happiness. Despite all their doubts and fears, however, the two begin a difficult but real journey towards a possible happiness and a world free from suffering.

“This is a small, quiet film of enormous power. (…) Given the fact of the war and its aftermath, Zanussi has no suggestions to make. He simply wants to tell the story of these people whose human needs persist. I have no insights into the personal lives of Komorowska or Wilson, but I imagine they must have some source from which to draw the sadness that they project in this film. There are scenes that entirely depend on their ability to find the strength to smile, to hope for a moment that their lives can be better, and the way they do that is enormously convincing. (This film) represents what I find most valuable about filmmaking: the ability to record the emotions during precise moments in the lives of other people.” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, 11 aprile 1986)
