SYNOPSIS

During the Second World War, after seeing his wife Helena and his child killed by four German Knights, Michal, a Polish man, joins the Resistance. On the run from the Gestapo, Michal takes refuge in a building, where the Nazis mistakenly arrest a man who looks and is dressed like him. The unfortunate man has a wife, Martha, who is about to give birth and looks incredibly like Helena. Shocked, Michal helps her deliver her baby and then decides to take care of them…

CRITICAL NOTE

The Third Part of the Night seems, more than other films do, to be on the edge of a cliff, facing a dark abyss where time is confused and the memories of the dead are the shadows of the living. It is an overtly political work describing, with the feverish frenzy of a metaphysical story, the fight against power. The use of the handheld camera adds to the sense of urge characterizing every shot, with its search for that surplus of meaning that cinema has to extract from reality to translate it, in its turn, into a stream of images.” (Giuseppe Gariazzo, Grazia Paganelli, Filmcritica n. 533, March 2003)
