SYNOPSIS

Chechen Republic, 2007. Russian troop positions. Aleksandra Nikolaevna is a grand-mother who has come to see her grandson, one of the best officers in his unit. She will spend a few days here, and will discover a new world. In this male world there are no women,no warmth or comfort. Daily life is meagre, people are shy of their feelings here. Or maybe there simply isn’t time or energy for feelings.

CRITICAL NOTE

“As always in Sokurov’s films, action is reduced to a sort of enigmatic pondering, a long Malherian ending with a taste of ground. The music, always in the background as if it came from a distant source, emphasizes the magnificent beauty of every shot. Sokurov looks with desire and melancholy at the young Russian soldiers as if they were angels with dirty fingernails, while the grandmother repeatedly comments on the strong smell emanating from these uniformed men exhausted by the heat of the place. On the Chechen side, the men are little more than raged silhouettes with mean looks, and only the women still hold their head up. They welcome Alexandra like a friend, a sister.”
