Yiannis is a Greek-Cypriot faded musician who lives in Nicosia, close to the UN Buffer Zone. Yiannis is fed up with life on the island, with the economic crisis and the never-ending Cyprus problem. His long-time girlfriend, Kika, just left him, while his mobster creditors are breathing down his neck. His plan is to leave Cyprus once and for all, with his beloved dog Jimi. However, his plans get turned upside down just three days before his planned departure, when Jimi runs away and crosses the buffer zone into the “Turkish side”. Yiannis crosses the checkpoint and finds Jimi, but is confronted with a European law that prohibits animal crossing between the two “sides”. Yiannis now finds himself stuck on the “Turkish side”, trying to find a way to bring his dog back while his time is running out.

Marios Piperides was born in 1975 in Nicosia, Cyprus. After studying Broadcast Management and Film Production in the US, he returned to Cyprus in 2002. As the audiovisual sector is small in Cyprus, Piperides had the opportunity to gain experience in every aspect of filmmaking. In 2005 he founded his production company, amp Filmworks. As a writer/director he has made a documentary and two short films. The main theme in his work is the ongoing division of Cyprus and their need to overcome their own prejudices. Smuggling Hendrix is Piperides’ first feature.

“(…) During the years that followed I had the opportunity to experience “the other side” at first hand, establish personal and professional ties with those who share our island, enrich my own narrative and, indeed, question some of the elements that I have been brought up on. The stories I encountered varied greatly, from the utterly tragic to the downright absurd, which triggered the desire in me to tell a story that captures both. Smuggling Hendrix is one of these stories. Based on a real life event, one man’s devotion to his dog provides a light touch to offset the more serious issues. Its micro plot reflects the complex real-world social dynamics of today: the divided island of Cyprus, the complexities of the lost property issues; and the thorny issue of the Turkish settlers, who have remained faceless all these years and are only used as negotiation numbers by politicians on both sides.”
