SYNOPSIS
1972. Gilles and Christine are two 17-year-olds from Paris like many others, feeling tremors of rebellion that lead to irresolute actions. They are both children of separated parents and impatient towards their own families. The restlessness of Christine, who has been arrested by the police for stealing records, prompts her father to take her to a mental institution, but she finally escapes to join Gilles, who is hiding in a country house where other teenagers like them are also staying. After spending a night together during a party, the two youths decide to leave without any specific destination.
CRITICAL NOTE
“Cold Water was initially conceived as a one-hour episode of anthology TV series All the Boys and Girls of Their Time and titled La page blanche; it was not until later that the film was supplemented with new material and released in cinemas with a new title. Assayas follows his young protagonists step by step, keeping the camera close on faces and bodies. His is a cinema that stubbornly searches for true emotions, and in this sense, it is mainly based on natural performances from the actors, a remarkable technical and productive freedom, and above all an almost intangible ability to provide a realistic representation of the torments of adolescence and the unbridgeable gap between parents and children.” (Carlo Valeri, Sentieri Selvaggi, 4 March 2010)
