Synopsis
In the alley in front of his tenement building, ageing bachelor Seligman finds a young woman covered in blood. He takes her to his apartment where Joe tells him about her life, her experiences with men and her insatiable appetite for sex. She first learns about the physiology of the female body from reading her doctor father’s medical books. Although not yet an adult, she and a girlfriend embark on a round of sexual escapades, seducing men in flats, train compartments, bars and offices. Jerôme, with whom she has a child, is the one constant in her life. But her happiness is fragile.

critical note
“Von Trier, rather, in his attempt to explore women’s sexual theory and practice — and consequently, the more opaque and petty ones of men — relies on diverse, bold, and complex narrative elements that range from psychoanalytic readings to refined metaphors, from numerical to photographic symbolism, from Voltaire-style dialogue/debate to melodramatic shocks. (…). The opening sequence alone, however, is enough to make clear what an unusual level Nymphomaniac possesses: a series of tracking shots that summon the viewer into a dark, deteriorated urban non-place, ridden with indistinct noises, sinister creaks, trickles of melting snow, and then suddenly torn apart by the heavy metal music of Rammstein. (…)”
