Synopsis
One summer evening, Suzanne arrives unannounced at her sister Jeanne’s home with her two young children, taking her by surprise. Not only have they not seen each other for several months, but Suzanne seems completely absent. When she wakes up the next day, Jeanne is stunned to discover a note left by her sister. Her shock gives way to anger when, at the police station, Jeanne realizes that no search can be launched: Suzanne has made a reckless decision to disappear…
the director: NATHAN AMBROSIONI
Nathan Ambrosioni was born in Grasse in 1999. He took his first steps in filmmaking by shooting two horror films during school vacations, which were later selected for festivals around the world. In 2016 he changed genres and wrote and filmed the short First Breath, with Zoe Adjani, selected for the Calgary and San Francisco Film Festivals. He subsequently shot other short films and a medium length film Three Days In September. In 2018 he made his debut feature: Paper Flags, with Noémie Merlant and Guillaume Gouix, thanks to the support of the French National Film Center (CNC). The film was in competition in Lecce and awarded at other international festivals. After scripting two films with Audrey Diwan, he directed Toni, his second feature film in 2022.
director’s statement
“A voluntary disappearance: what does that actually mean? And what does this right to be forgotten, which we all possess, really entail? This right allows us to leave without the police being able to intervene provided that our departure is the result of our own choice. Every year in France, around 15,000 people decide to disappear, to simply vanish into thin air. In Japan, they have an evocative term for it: to evaporate. At the same time, I did some soul-searching to understand why this subject interests me so much. No doubt because there is something dysfunctional in my family. I wanted to talk about absence: how does a family move forward when one member goes missing? How can it rebuild itself in a state of such uncertainty? The intention of the film is to look at those who are left behind, to see them move on despite the lack of answers. The film strives to evoke this in a very simple way, through very concrete elements, everyday scenes. I sought to make this film as a way of reconciliation.”
