synopsis
Drawn by an advertisement for a typing position, hundreds of young women from all over Rome flock to the company’s headquarters. The wait lasts several hours, and at a certain point, one of the women attempts to sneak past the others. This causes a frenzied commotion in the group, and the staircase collapses. Many suffer bruises, some are slightly injured, others more seriously, while one, despite prompt surgery, passes away. The unfortunate accident has varied consequences: some of the young women simply return to their previous lives; a middle-class girl who had hoped to become independent to follow her fiancé finds the strength to leave her family; the mistreated maid goes back to her hometown; a young woman can no longer conceal her pregnancy, and the girl who caused the quarrel is summoned to the police station, although it is clear she bears no responsibility.
the director: GIUSEPPE DE SANTIS
(Fondi 1917 – Rome 1997) De Santis began working in cinema in the 1940s as a critic, screenwriter, and assistant to Luchino Visconti in Ossessione(1942). He participated in the Roman Resistance and, in 1946, collaborated with Aldo Vergano on The Sun Still Rises. In 1947, he made his directorial debut with Tragic Hunt, and two years later signed his masterpiece, Bitter Rice. In 1950 came No Peace Under the Olive Tree, filmed in Lazio and conceived as an ideal sequel to the previous film. He subsequently directed Rome 11:00, one of his greatest international successes. In Yugoslavia, he made The Road a Year Long(1958) and later traveled to the Soviet Union to make Attack and Retreat(1964), one of his most moving works. After a long silence, he took part in the filming of Oggi è un altro giorno(1995).
