Synopsis
Prime numbers are only divisible by one and themselves. They are solitary numbers, incomprehensible to others. Alice and Mattia are both “prime,” each haunted by tragedies that deeply marked them in childhood: a skiing accident for Alice, which left her with a defect in one leg and the loss of a twin sister for Mattia. When they meet as teenagers in the hallways of their school, they both recognize their own pain in the other. As they grow up, their destinies intertwine in a special friendship, until Mattia, after earning a degree in Physics, decides to accept a job abroad. The two are separated for many years, and it will take a series of events to reunite them, bringing to the surface a host of unconfessed emotions.

critical note
“Let’s start with a fact that reviews usually underestimate: The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Saverio Costanzo is a technically extraordinary film. The cinematography (by Fabio Cianchetti) and editing (by Francesca Calvelli) are of truly international caliber. (…) Artistic genre has forever been an excellent vehicle for reaching the hearts of audiences. All the actors are superb, with three deserving special mentions: a magnificent Maurizio Donadoni, a moving Isabella Rossellini, and a heroic Alba Rohrwacher (at least ten kilos lighter than in Soldini’s Come Undone, but with the same tonnage of talent).”
(Alberto Crespi, L’Unità, 10 September 2010)
