Synopsis
Zoran is a chronically fatigued night shift worker on a reality program, where he watches participants sleep on around fifty monitors. After his shift ends, in one of his morning attempts to fall asleep, Zoran’s already light sleep is interrupted by a phone call from his estranged father Vesa, who has cancer. Zoran and Vesa go from one doctor to the next, through the institutional chaos of the public and private healthcare systems. Although he is fully committed to helping his father, Zoran by no means accepts the difficult truth – that Vesa is dying. Instead, and to escape from this, Zoran directs his emotions towards his neglected love life, seeking fulfillment in two equally impossible relationships – with his ex-girlfriend and now someone else’s fiancé Tamara and Ema, a reality program starlet. When both adventures end in disaster and Vesa’s condition worsens considerably, Zoran finally begins to reconcile with the inevitable and embarks on a seemingly pointless journey to a monastery, where Vesa wants to confess for the first time in his life. In an uncomfortable drive in a Yugo Florida down the highway, Zoran finally meets his father, an equally insecure man who also desires closeness. He receives long- waited affection from him. And he sends him off.

the director: VLADIMIR TAGI
Vladimir Tagic is best known as creator/writer/director for his CannesSeries awarded hit TV series Operation Sabre, which premiered in the Competition program, winning the Special Interpretation Award, also winning the Primetime Killer Award for best TV series at Serial Killer Festival in Brno, Czech Republic. His previous TV series Morning Changes Everything, a big regional success in Ex Yugoslavia that had its Avant premiere at Sarajevo FF in 2018, among many successes won Rainbow award, within the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia in Belgrade. His short films traveled the world and the most successful one Emergency Exit premiered at Clermont Ferrand IFF. In 2017 the film was presented in Cannes IFF in the framework of the Acid Trip program. Yugo Florida is Vladimir’s debut fiction.

director’s statement
“This is the most personal story I have written. My father fell ill in 2015 and several months before he died, he wanted me to take him to a monastery to make a confession. What was strange was that he was a communist and an atheist his entire life, he didn’t even baptize me and I can’t say that he had a developed attitude towards religion. One November morning, he probably overslept for the first time in his life and we were late, so he was agitated. We sat in his run-down Yugo with me behind the wheel, the car was not fully functional and the road was icy. That morning was probably the saddest, funniest and most absurd morning of my life.”
