“The Summer That Ended Twice was born at some undefined point in my adolescence during long summer afternoons spent with my grandparents in a small village in Sardinia. It was in those days that my imagination quietly took shape — a place where the boundaries between reality and imagination blurred under the sun. This film tells the story of my two boyhood worlds. On one hand, there is the outer world: summer, friendships, forbidden explorations, and the afternoons when you came home miraculously alive after a dangerous adventure you never confessed. On the other hand, there is a quieter world, comprised of fears, absences and a first, confused awareness of death. I grew up in a village where events turned into legends. An actual event, such as the disappearance of a person, an abandoned house, or an accident in the mountains, would over time become a story as it passed from one person to another and eventually came to belong to everyone. So, the ghost stories I listened to were in fact stories of real people, whose images lingered beneath the surface ofthe places they had once inhabited. In that world, the supernatural was simply part of everyday life, and the will of the dead kept echoing among the living with similar force. Within this film I sought to recapture the feelings I experienced as a child; the idea that, over the course of a summer, anything could happen, and that the boundary between the world of the living and that of the dead was as thin as a sliver of light filtering from a ghostly shipping container, forgotten under the sun. There were afternoons when you died a little, leaving pieces of your youth behind, along with some friend for life who would never come home again after his last summer.”
Matteo Incollu was born in Baunei in 1981. After earning a master’s degree in Film and Television at the DAMS in Bologna, he took his first steps into the world of cinema as assistant director on the films of Salvatore Mereu (Sonetaula and Bellas Mariposas). He later founded the production company Mommotty, where he wrote and directed his short films, including Disco Volante and Male Fadàu, winners of numerous Italian and international awards. His latest short film, Luce d’agosto (2025), is currently in distribution. In the summer of 2024, he shot his first feature film, titled The Summer That Ended Twice (2026).
