synopsis

It’s the night between the 5th and 6th of January, and La Befana has been struck by a strange illness. She therefore entrusts her assistant, Scarafoni, with the task of delivering the presents. A greedy and deceitful man, he intends to take advantage of the situation without her knowledge by inflating the prices for their own profit. The toys, however, refuse to go along with his plan and decide to leave the shop, choosing to deliver themselves to well-behaved children. The first of these is Francesco, a poor orphan boy who longsfor a very special toy: the little train from The Blue Arrow, which reminds him of the one his beloved father used to work on. Scarafoni tries to recover the toys, but eventually La Befana discovers what is happening and decides to intervene in person.

critical note

“Charming without ever being vulgar, the film engages with children’s imagination rather than with the “memory” of certain television cartoons. This is further demonstrated by the decision to favor full shots and long shots over close-ups, which would not suit the almost stylized simplicity of the artwork. The task of lightening the film’s poetically melancholic atmosphere with a few comic gags is left to the villain, wonderfully voiced by Dario Fo, while La Befana is voiced by Lella Costa.”
