SYNOPSIS

Andrej Tarkovskij, a brilliant filmmaker whose films are regarded as masterpieces of world cinema, has left us with eight movies and the ever growing desire to understand his work. The film, directed by his son, recounts Tarkovskij’s life and work through the words of the filmmaker himself, who shares his memories, his view of art, his thoughts on the fate of artists and the meaning of human life. The film contains extremely rare audio recordings and never-before-heard recordings of poems by Arsenij Tarkovskij, one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century and father of the filmmaker, read by the author himself, who deeply influenced his son’s cinematic style with his literary work. The images of the film include fragments of Tarkovskij’s original films, vintage photo and video materials and shots taken in the places where he lived and on the sets of his films in Russia, Sweden and Italy, his adopted homeland.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

“There have been many and original attempts to explain the “Tarkovskij phenomenon” in contemporary art. But what did Tarkovskij himself think about it? What principles guided him in the creation of his masterpieces? Where did his inspiration come from? What was he experiencing and what did he want to convey to the people who watched his films? Would it be possible, more than thirty years after his death, to listen again to the voice of the filmmaker as he talks about his life, his work, his vocation? These were the goals I set myself while making this film, in order to take the audience to the roots of the filmmaker’s thought and to share the emotion of a new encounter with the great artist, man and mentor who was my father.”
