Twenty-four short films have been selected for Puglia Show, the traditional competition for young Apulian filmmakers under 35 years old, directed by Luigi La Monica. The Jury of the competition, chaired by Giulio Mastromauro and composed by Francesca Manno and Eugenie Bottereau, will assign the CNC – National Short Film Centre Award and the Augustus Color Award to the best short film in competition.

Other awards will be the €3.000 Rai Cinema Channel Prize, awarded by the Jury composed by Maria Federica Lo Jacono and Manuela Rima (Marketing and Commercial section of Rai Cinema channel), and the Unisalento Award, awarded by the Jury composed by 25 students of the Cineclub Universitario (University Film Club), an activity for the promotion and study of audiovisual culture established by the Interdepartmental Research Centre in Digital Humanities of the University of Salento and supported by Apulia Film Commission Foundation.

Among the side awards of the Puglia Show competition, the Festival, in collaboration with CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) Puglia, has established this year the CGIL Puglia Award for best short film on labour: “The institution of the “Cgil Puglia Award for best short film on labour”, within the 21st edition of the European Film Festival, reaffirms a concept for which the trade union has always fought, and that is that labour should be talked about in all contexts as an instrument of democracy, freedom, rights, dignity. – said Pino Gesmundo, Secretary General of Cgil Puglia – “50 years after the Workers’ Statute,  knowing that labour issues are at the centre of this ambitious Festival gives us the opportunity to reflect collectively on its topicality and its state of application, in a very complicated historical phase for employmentThe viewing of the short films in competition represents for us an important opportunity to deepen and share with the new generations the debate on the dignity of labour, on the guarantees and protection of workers, thanks to the expressive power of the film language, whose extraordinary effectiveness we have already experienced.

In this particular moment of great concern for the stability of the social and economic balances that sustain society, with so many tribulations for the world of employment, in the context of a crisis that, due to the current pandemic, risks having terribly dramatic consequences, we felt it was our duty, as cultural operators, to award a filmmaker who validly stimulates the sensitivity of the audience in this regard – underlines Luigi La Monica, director of the Puglia Show competition – and it is, I believe, fundamental that this should be done by the new generations, who are called to welcome, reject or formulate the changes that will come”.
